Just like with every other parenting topic, there is a plethora of information available on the internet about cloth diapers. And how can we be surprised when cloth diapers are undoubtedly a lot of fun to talk about?! Once you delve into the great realms of the cloth world, you’ll want to start sharing and talking about them, too. It’s typically how it goes.
But in all truthfulness, the myriad of information available on cloth can be… overwhelming. There are so many tips tricks to filter through, but here are a few quick starter tips that will hopefully simplify the beginning of your cloth diaper journey.
1. Avoid initially investing in just one type of diaper. You may find that you like different styles for different reasons. You may also be surprised that you like one brand more than another. We highly recommend resisting the urge to buy a stash of just one style or brand and, instead, starting your cloth journey with a little bit of variety. You’ll soon figure out what works for your family and be able to tailor your stash accordingly. The bonus? Cloth sells fairly easily and retains value, so you’ll be able to sell off what doesn’t work and fund something new.
2. Keep it simple. This is applicable to everything – but primarily your wash routine. When you begin to complicate your wash routine, try too many things out, or throw in a lot of additional products and the like, it can be hard to troubleshoot any potential issues that may arise. So we recommend taking the simple route, especially since those can be just as effective. For example, if my diapers are starting to smell a little funny, I do extra washes (with just water!) and lay them out in the sun. Simple.
3. Don’t stress. The important thing to remember is that everyone’s cloth journey is different and there’s a solution for everything. There are a variety of styles, brands, and accessories that make it easy for a family to find what works for them. And if cloth just isn’t for you, that’s okay! If you’re not quite sure, consider cloth diapering part-time to start getting into the swing of things.
